The singer has been mourning the death of Scottish DJ SOPHIE who passed away on January 30, 2020.

The awkwardness kicked off after the 16-year-old decided to respond to the hashtag, mistakenly thinking all the positive and uplifting messages were made up for her.

She wrote, in a now deleted tweeted: “I am looking through the ‘hereforcharli’ hashtag and oh my goodness you are all so sweet to me.

“You have no idea how much your kind words warm my heart i am so lucky to have you all by my side!! i love you bebs.”

However, the popular social media star’s good feelings took a turn when people let her know the real reason behind the hashtag.

One person wrote: “This is so embarrassing. Chile and it’s still up. Charli XCX lost a close friend and of course the famous for being famous must center themselves. Rest In Peace SOPHIE.”

Another added: “Who’s gonna tell her we mean charli xcx???” while one person chimed in, “I got secondhand embarrassment from this and this tag was supposed to be made for Charli xcx and SOPHIE a very inspirational artist and both wonderful artist as well…”

All this comes after SOPHIE’s management confirmed the musician’s passing to NME with a statement.

It read: “It is with profound sadness that I have to inform you that musician and producer SOPHIE passed away this morning around 4am in Athens, where the artist had been living, following a sudden accident.

“At this time respect and privacy for the family is our priority. We would also ask for respect for her fanbase, and to treat the private nature of this news with sensitivity.”

Her label added on Twitter that SOPHIE – real name Sophie Xeon – “slipped and fell” as she tried to “watch the full moon” in Athens, Greece.

The 34-year-old had worked with Charli XCX as she produced the English artist’s song Vroom Vroom. SOPHIE also collaborated with Madonna.

In 2018, SOPHIE was nominated for a Grammy for her first and only album, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides.
