Dutch police confirmed they were called to reports of a stabbing in Grote Marktstraat at 12.10pm, where two people were then taken to hospital. They added there was also a fire in the supermarket, but this has been put out. The suspect fled, with investigations continuing. The police tweeted: “The suspect fled the shop in the direction of the Bijenkorf around 12.10 pm. The suspect is a tall, tinted man, about 30 years old. He was wearing a black jacket, tracksuit and gray shoes.”
Police added: “The report started with the emergency services with a stabbing incident and a fire in the supermarket on the Grote Markt.
“The fire has been put out.
“The two injured are taken to hospital by ambulance.
“The police started an investigation.”
The official Twitter channel of the British Embassy in the Netherlands said: “We are aware of an ongoing incident in The Hague.
“Please stay alert and follow the advice of local authorities.”
Pictures on social media showed a police cordon in place around the nearby shops.
A large group of officers were also pictured at the scene of the incident.
