Robert Lewandowski gunning for Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League record and could surpass Gerd Muller’s Bayern Munich haul
What a season Robert Lewandowski has had – and he may not be finished yet.
The Bayern Munich striker has scored a whopping 54 goals in all competitions this season – more than any other player in Europe – and is chasing down two goalscoring records.
While the domestic campaign is done, he could have two more games to add to his tally as Bayern face Lyon in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday – live on talkSPORT.
Lewandowski, who netted in Bayern’s 8-2 win over Barcelona last week, is just three goals off from equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of most goals in a single Champions League season (17).
The 31-year-old has scored 14 goals in seven matches this term, three short of Ronaldo’s feat – which came when Real Madrid won a 10th European Cup in the 2013/14 season.
Meanwhile, another record Lewandowski could break is the most goals scored in a single season for Bayern Munich across all competitions.
Bayern icon Gerd Muller scored 55 goals in the 1972/73 campaign, which is just one more than the Poland international’s current tally.
It has been an incredible campaign for the Polish hitman, who would have been in with a strong chance of winning the 2020 Ballon d’Or if it had not been cancelled.
Organisers France Football axed this year’s ceremony due to the coronavirus pandemic, which brought a two-month halt to football earlier this year.
The decision did not go down well with Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as he insisted it was ‘not very fair’ on Lewandowski.
He said: “I believe Robert Lewandowski is playing a fantastic season and he performed maybe the best season in his career.
“In the end, it’s not very fair – not just for Bayern but also for Robert Lewandowski, who might have won.
“I believe it’s very important that in a season that, except the French league, where performed through to the end of the season, it has to be possible to give the Ballon d’Or to the best footballer in the world.
“Of course, I believe, in those circumstances, Robert would have a good chance to win it for the first time in his career.”
