Relief for Aubameyang – ‘I’ve dropped every trophy I ever won with Arsenal’, reveals Gunners legend Lee Dixon after FA Cup blunder
Don’t worry, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang; you’re not the first Arsenal star to drop a clanger during a trophy lift.
The Gunners captain hit the headlines on Saturday as he scored twice to almost single-handedly win the club a historic 14th FA Cup… only to drop the trophy moments later.
With the Wembley Stadium stands empty of fans there was a strange aura around the trophy presentation anyway, but it became more awkward when Aubameyang managed to drop the cup in front of his teammates before they had a chance to even lift it.
But, it didn’t dampen their spirits for long as Mikel Arteta soon celebrated with his players on the Wembley pitch after marking his first season as a full-time manager with his first piece of silverware.
And someone who knows all about what it’s like to win cups and then let them slip through his hands is Lee Dixon, who joined Monday’s talkSPORT Breakfast to reflect on Saturday’s win over Chelsea.
The Gunners legend didn’t watch the game – incredibly he chose that day to move house – but he tuned in just in time to see Auba’s trophy gaffe.
But he told the striker not to worry, revealing most of the trophies in Arsenal’s cabinet hold plenty of scars from being dropped by past players… and most of them were him!
Asked about the trophy lift, Dixon – winner of two First Division titles, two Premier League titles and three FA Cups in a Gunners shirt – told talkSPORT: “Yeah, it wasn’t the best, was it…
“But, you don’t practise picking trophies up do you, because you’re not allowed touch them until you’ve won it.
“I was just thinking about the different celebrations we had; when we won something with George Graham, which was slightly more liquid-based shall we say, and then under Arsene Wenger where were allowed a lettuce leaf, a cucumber and some salad dressing…
“Every single FA Cup or league championship that I picked up, I dropped at some point.
“You know the famous old Football League trophy, the one we won in 89? It’s a beautiful trophy with a lady on the top, but that’s at an angle now because we dropped it so many times!
“She’s leaning over – it looks like she’s been celebrating with George Graham!”
At least he can remember when he lifted the trophy, unlike Jack Wilshere…
The former Arsenal midfielder also joined Breakfast hosts Laura Woods and Darren Bent to look back on the club’s record 14th FA Cup win, and he discussed his infamous cup celebrations back in 2015.
Wilshere landed himself in a spot of bother after he led a crowd of thousands of Gooners in chants of ‘what do we think of Tottenham… s***!’ during the club’s open top bus parade.
“…I don’t remember any of that,” the current West Ham star admitted.
“I was so excited, I won the trophy with my boyhood club it was a dream come true.
“I remember we won it on the Saturday and we had to be on the bus on Sunday at 9am, we didn’t get back to the hotel until about 8:45am!”
That would explain it.
Asked about Aubameyang’s butter fingers moment, the two-time FA Cup winner said: “Oh man… I could see him asking someone if he had to take the base, and I was just like ‘no, no, no, no, no!’
“I was watching it cringing, it was bad!”
