London’s community kitchen, which is in the Wembley area of the city, says it faces “the longest queues in the country” after a sharp rise in families seeking aid. My London reports the centre has recently seen queues of upto 2km (1.2miles), typically of 800 people.

“This is just monstrous. We should be expecting 1,000 people this week,” said volunteer Taz Khan, 45, who has been helping out with the kitchen for seven years.

“There is no food project in the country doing this no way is this happening on this scale,” Taz said.

“People are seriously struggling. 800 families are queuing every single Saturday.”

According to Taz, the queues began to dramatically increase three months ago. By word of mouth, the queues grew from having 230 families queuing.

“That is every week for us,” added former Michelin star chef Taz.

“That’s just the way things are.”

Queues are expected to be over 1000 people in length next time the foodbank is held on Saturday.

A two-minute long timelapse of the food bank’s queue has gone viral on social media.

An army of 320 volunteers has been amassed to deal with the increased demand with 60 people being required when the food bank opens each Saturday at 11.00am help serve and coordinate people. You can donate to London’s Community Kitchen here.
