Paul Heyman reveals what happened when WWE boss Vince McMahon fired him as executive director of RAW
The landscape in WWE drastically changed in the summer of 2019.
Paul Heyman was appointed the executive director of RAW and Eric Bischoff was given the same role for SmackDown.
It was only a few months later that Bischoff was relieved of his duties and Heyman suffered the same fate almost exactly a year on.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Heyman explained that it was actually a very positive experience when he got the news and there was no animosity from either side.
“We left with a smile, a handshake, and a hug,” said Heyman. “Absolutely no harsh feelings and actually better feelings about each other because of the way that it ended because it’s ended miserably before,” he added.
During a call with investors, McMahon actually praised Heyman following the news and it seems as if the pair parted on far better terms than they did in 2006.
Of course, the difference this time around was that WWE announced they would be keeping Heyman as a talent.
At the time, many presumed that was to keep working with Brock Lesnar.
As it turns out, Heyman has aligned with a heel Roman Reigns and reinvigorated the SmackDown product. The ratings reflect that and Reigns is probably the hottest character in the company right now.
“Vince’s only comment was ‘I thought he did a great job creatively.’ My run in terms of serving at the pleasure of the chairman was up and then this opportunity presented itself both for me, for Roman and for WWE and we all jumped on it,” said Heyman.
Heyman has a long history with the Samoan dynasty and the elders of the Anoa’i family. Whether working alongside or against, Heyman has been campaigning for Reigns for many years.
Now, he’s doing it on screen. What happens when Lesnar comes back around? Well the Beast will have to sign a new WWE contract for that to happen first and the expectation is that won’t happen until crowds can make a real return.
