Meghan Markle’s Royal Style Inspired by Her Suits Character
While Suits is certainly a stellar show with its own merits — epic one-liners, smart characters who are equally attractive, and of course, the suits — it’s also the legal drama that introduced many of us to Meghan Markle. More importantly, it introduced us to her character Rachel Zane’s fabulous corporate wardrobe. As a longtime fan of the series, I recently rewatched all nine seasons, and while every one of the lawyers’ styles are worth admiring, Rachel’s in particular stood out to me, specifically because many of her outfits and signature pieces reminded me of Meghan’s ensembles in real life.
After leaving the show in 2011, Meghan has since become not only royalty, but also a fashion icon — almost everything she’s spotted wearing sells out immediately and garners a huge waitlist, after all. We’ve come to know her chic, preppy style and affinity for a crisp button-down quite well, and during my recent Suits binge, I seriously wondered whether Meghan had snagged a few pieces from Rachel’s closet when she moved to the UK and back to California. Among the many similarities, it seems Meghan and Rachel both love a casual yet elevated look, usually consisting of a loose dress shirt and expert tailoring.
“Meghan and I loved Rachel’s clothes,” Suits costume designer Jolie Andreatta said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK back in 2018. “We’d always say that, if we could, we would live in Rachel’s clothes.” While she might not be living in Rachel’s exact pieces, I think it’s safe to say Meghan drew some major fashion inspiration from her character. Ahead, see the key pieces and outfit formulas that define both the Duchess of Sussex’s (yes, that’s still her title) and Rachel’s wardrobes.
