Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas started the race at the Nurburgring on pole but the British driver had taken the lead by lap 13.

Bottas then suffered engine trouble and had to retire shortly afterwards.

Despite a late safety car, Hamilton kept his cool to cross the line clear of Verstappen and claim the 91st win of his remarkable career. The victory came 14 years and 10 days after Schumacher’s final grand prix triumph in China.

The historic win is even more poignant for Hamilton, with Schumacher’s home town of Kerpen 52 miles north of the Nurburgring and he was presented with one of the racing legend’s helmet after matching the record.

Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo rounded off the podium positions taking third place at the German circuit.

Hamilton also took a step closer to claiming his seventh world championship, which would also equal Schumacher’s record, thanks to Bottas’ retirement.

The 35-year-old moved to 230 points with Bottas in second on 161 and Verstappen third on 147.
