Everton sign ‘future England captain’ who will ‘become one of the world’s best defenders’ from Norwich in record deal
Everton have signed Norwich defender Ben Godfrey for £25million – the biggest deal in the Canaries’ history.
The 22-year-old has penned a five-year deal to become Everton’s fourth major signing of the summer.
He follows Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez through the door at Goodison Park.
Godfrey made 33 appearances in his debut season in the Premier League as Norwich were relegated to the Championship last term.
He played in the Canaries’ opening three matches of the new campaign, but was left out of the matchday squad for Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Derby.
The £25m figure, which could rise to £30m, is the biggest fee Norwich have received for a player, surpassing the £20m Leicester paid for James Maddison in 2018.
Canaries boss Daniel Farke recently said Everton are getting the best centre-back in the Championship with world-class potential.
“Whoever signs Ben Godfrey can be unbelievably happy,” he said. “It is no coincidence he is captain of the England Under-21s. This club has had some decent players in the past so to be rated the biggest transfer fee for a figure that is on the world level says everything about his potential.
“I am pretty sure he will play for best clubs in the world one day and he has the potential to captain England. That is what I wish for him.
“He is one of the best centre backs in the world in terms of potential.
“La Masia (Barcelona’s academy) can close the doors because everyone looks at Norwich. We have developed some of the biggest talents in this country.
“It started with the Murphys, James Maddison and so on. Sadly we have already lost Jamal Lewis, the best left back in this league. Pretty likely we now lose the best centre back and we still have some real talent with potential.”
Godfrey, an England Under-21 international, played 78 times for Norwich after joining from York in 2016.
He will look to help Everton maintain their unbeaten start to the season when they host arch rivals Liverpool after this month’s international break.
