Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier trilogy fight set for July as The Diamond appears to confirm date for UFC clash
Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier look set to face each other in the octagon for the third time later this year with The Diamond appearing to confirm the date.
‘The Notorious’ was knocked out for the first time in his MMA career in January on Fight Island as Poirier chopped the Irishman’s lead leg away and pounced on his stricken opponent.
McGregor immediately blamed inactivity for his defeat, although credited ‘The Diamond’ for executing such a well-choreographed game plan, before insisting he wanted a third fight.
Initial reports suggested that May 10 was a possible date, but that was quickly denied.
Reports had emerged over the last week suggesting that the fight could be fixed for July 10, and Poirier appeared to confirm this was the cash.
He tweeted just that… July 10 and nothing else.
There is yet to be any other official confirmation from the UFC or McGregor, but it’s looking increasingly likely that the two will clash for a third time.
Speaking to Joe Rogan previously, Poirier admitted he would love to do the rematch once again in either June or July. However, just like the first fight at UFC 178, the Louisiana-native admitted the third would be completely different from the second.
“If I get the call and it’s time to go to work, I will lock myself in training camp,” he said.
“It’s fighting man, I don’t think you ever really (have someone’s number). He’ll make adjustments. It’ll be a completely different fight.
“Like the first one and the second one were different, the third one is going to be different as well. I’m going to make adjustments as well. I’m going to switch it up, keep things fresh and keep him guessing.”
