Conor McGregor and Israel Adesanya butt heads over controversial UFC knockdown record
Conor McGregor and Israel Adesanya both think they claim a significant UFC record – but who is right?
The UFC greats disagree over who has the most knockdowns ever in a title fight following McGregor’s recent Instagram post.
Thursday marked four years since McGregor beat Eddie Alvarez to claim the lightweight title, becoming the first man in UFC history to hold two belts at the same time.
But the Irishman believes the victory carries extra weight to this day, although the UFC doesn’t officially acknowledge it.
‘Notorious’ claims to have knocked his opponent down five times, but the record-keepers have it down as three.
Adesanya, meanwhile, bagged four official knockdowns during his in his middleweight title fight with Kelvin Gastelum back in April 2019.
“Most knockdowns in a UFC World Title Fight,” McGregor wrote in the caption for one of his posts. “Clinical shooting. I have surpassed this level, multiple times over. Excited to showcase!”
Adesanya replied in the comments: “2nd most knockdowns.”
It’s not the first time McGregor has made a point of this, previously urging the UFC to provide a more accurate record of his Alvarez fight.
