Burnley went close twice in quick succession in the opening stages, only to be denied by Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, before they did take the lead, dealing a further blow to the hosts’ already slim survival chances.

Westwood was picked out at the back post by Matej Vydra and made no mistake slotting the ball into the back of the net.

Fulham’s task became even harder just before the half-time whistle as they fell two goals behind.

The ball fell kindly for Wood, who expertly struck his shot into the top corner from distance to net his 50th strike for the Clarets.

The Cottagers huffed and puffed after the interval but to avail, with the west London club’s second relegation in three seasons confirmed.
