Whether you’re planning to travel in a few months or hoping to stock up on airline rewards for post-pandemic trips, a Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards card could get you there with a new sign-up bonus. The Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus, Premier and Priority credit cards are doubling their bonuses for new cardholders and offering more time to earn them.

The cards also get a points-earning boost through 2021 on Southwest Airlines purchases.

Here’s what you need to know about the new Southwest card offer, which could put your 2021 earnings within reach of a Companion Pass.

What Is the Offer?

You can earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend $10,000 on the card in the first nine months. New cardholders have two chances to earn points.

When you spend $2,000 on the card in the first three months, you earn 50,000 points. You can get 30,000 extra points if you spend $8,000 more on the card over the next six months.

These points are worth about $1,100, according to U.S. News research, doubling the value of the previous 40,000-point offer and adding six months to the earning window.

Chase has not only upgraded the sign-up bonus but also the bonus points on Southwest Airlines purchases for Southwest Rapid Rewards cards.

Cardholders will earn five points per dollar spent on up to $2,000 in monthly Southwest purchases, and all other purchases earn one point per dollar through 2021. Previously, cardholders received two points per dollar for Southwest purchases and one point per dollar on all other purchases.

The new offer applies to all three Chase Southwest consumer credit cards – Plus, Premier and Priority – and is on top of the annual bonus points cardholders earn. Each year on your account anniversary, you will receive:

Is the Offer Worthwhile?

A sign-up bonus worth more than $1,000 in airline rewards is valuable whether or not you have immediate travel plans.

The value of the bonus eclipses what these cards charge for annual fees, which ranges from $69 to $149. You can easily come out ahead in the first year and beyond, even if you plan to earn rewards now and redeem them later.

Also, earning the entire bonus puts you about two-thirds of the way to the 125,000 points needed in a calendar year to obtain a Southwest Companion Pass. This benefit allows you to choose one person to fly with you for just taxes and fees, from $5.60 one way, every time you purchase or redeem points for a flight.

Once you qualify, the Companion Pass is good for the rest of the year that you earned it and the next calendar year.

Comparing Sign-Up Bonuses

Southwest cards aren’t the only travel credit cards enhancing sign-up bonuses to attract new cardholders during the pandemic travel slump. Make sure you compare the Southwest offer with others from travel cards vying for your business:

  • United Explorer Card. New cardholders can earn up to 70,000 bonus miles, worth about $1,200, in two installments over six months. You’ll get 60,000 bonus miles if you spend $3,000 on the card in the first three months and then 10,000 additional miles with $3,000 more on the card in the next three months.
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. You can earn 100,000 bonus miles worth $1,000 when you spend $20,000 on the card in the first 12 months. If you can’t complete that spending requirement, you can still earn 50,000 miles after you spend $3,000 in the first three months.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. New cardholders can earn 60,000 bonus points worth up to $750 by spending $4,000 in the first three months.

Should You Claim the Offer?

Whether your plan is to rack up Southwest points to use now or later, this bonus is worth a look.

This is the largest points bonus Southwest consumer cards have offered in recent memory. Previously, the bonus has been as high as 60,000 points or has combined points with the Companion Pass.

If you don’t think you can meet the spending requirement for the card or don’t envision traveling anytime soon, the bonus probably isn’t worth it for you. A cash back credit card with a flexible rewards program may be a better choice.
