Formula 1 fans were thanking the halo after seeing incredible onboard footage of the four-car crash at Mugello.

The crash was sparked as Giovinazzi crashed into the back of Williams driver Latifi when the race restarted after a safety car period.

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz then ploughed into the back of Giovinazzi sending the Alfa Romeo driver temporarily into the air.

Haas driver Kevin Magnussen was also caught up in the incident with all four cars sent into the barriers.

The safety car was issued after just two corners when Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly, last week’s surprise winner at the Italian Grand Prix, ended up in the gravel.

The drivers involved walked away unscathed, and Sainz’s onboard showed just how lucky all four were to avoid injury, with the Spaniard nursing his wrist on the walk back to the pits the only visible sign of pain.

The footage shows a piece of debris deflecting off the halo on Sainz’s McLaren which surely would have caused serious injury before the FIA made the safety device mandatory in 2018.

Fans were praising the halo after watching the onboard footage, with F1 journalist Will Buxton joining many viewers in being thankful for the simple but brilliant curved bar.

Serious questions were being asked over the cause of the crash, with Romain Grosjean furious with leader Valtteri Bottas for driving too slowly at the restart.

“That was f****** stupid from whoever was at the front,” the Haas driver yelled over the radio.

“They want to kill us or what? This is the worst thing I have ever seen.”
