Heavyweight icon Evander Holyfield has confirmed he will come out of retirement to fight Kevin McBride – the Irishman who famously beat Mike Tyson in his last professional fight.

Holyfield, 58, has been retired from boxing for ten years after becoming the first man ever to reign as undisputed world champion at both cruiserweight and heavyweight.

The American was involved in two incredible battles with famous rival Tyson in 1996 and 1997, the second of which became known as the ‘Bite Fight’ when Iron Mike tore off a chunk of Holyfield’s ear on his way to disqualification.

Tyson has already come out of retirement to fight Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition last November – and talks were held over a Holyfield trilogy fight in May.

But instead, Holyfield will return to the ring and face one of Tyson’s conquerors: 47-year-old McBride, who is also ending ten years of retirement from the sport.

The six-round bout will take place on June 5 in Florida on the undercard for the title fight between Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr in Triller Fight Club’s latest star-studded event.

Triller Fight Club, a partnership between Triller and Snoop Dogg spearheaded by Ryan Kavanaugh, has been the main driving force behind boxing’s recent surge in legends coming back, as well as the YouTube fight scene.

This Saturday, they host Jake Paul, an internet sensation, versus Ben Askren, a former MMA champion, in a boxing match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with a host of high-profile performers on the bills.

Holyfield said: “I am proud to be able to join Triller Fight Club as they are exactly what our industry needed. They have reimagined the sport of boxing in a very exciting new way.

“Their combination of young talent, music, entertainment and special matchups is setting a new standard for our sport, and my return to the ring for this fight is one that everyone, myself included, will enjoy, and I am proud to help take this to the next level.”

Meanwhile, promoter Kavenaugh said: “Our continued reinvention of boxing as four-quadrant entertainment now adds one of the biggest names in the history of boxing, Evander Holyfield, against one of the best opponents, Kevin McBride.

“He joins a lineup featuring some of the most elite fighters who are on their way up the ranks and world-class musical entertainment as we present a multifaceted experience for fans of every interest in four action-packed and exciting pay per view hours.”
