Billy Joe Saunders has confirmed he suffered a broken eye socket and cheek bone in three places as he issued his first statement since a devastating stoppage defeat at the hands of Canelo Alvarez.

Saunders relinquished his WBO super-middleweight title in Dallas after a series of brutal uppercuts left unable him unable to see out of his right eye – resulting in his corner throwing in the towel at the end of the eighth round.

In a statement on Facebook, the former two-weight world champion wrote: “Thanks everyone for the messages.

“Broken eye socket and broken cheek bone in three places. Operation yesterday all went well.

“You win some, you lose some. Didn’t feel out of my league but got caught with a good shot and couldn’t see.

“Ben [Davison] got the corner to pull it. Thank you to all who watched. I’ll be back, God bless you all.”

Explaining the decision to stop the fight, trainer Mark Tibbs told Behind the Gloves: “His eye socket was caved in and he couldn’t see.

“I didn’t get the response from him so, you know. It’s frustrating, really, because I felt that he was growing into it. But I had to pull it.”

“He never said, ‘No, that’s it,’ he left it to me,” the experienced trainer added.

“He took it well, but he was in pain. The eye socket was gone and he was in pain.”

Saunders’ promoter Eddie Hearn previously revealed that the 31-year-old is facing a lengthy spell out and said he may never fight again.

“He will be out for a long, long time,” Hearn said.

“He may decide to retire, saying he’s won his two world titles so done all he wanted in boxing.”
